Chapter Nine

Matt pulled himself back into his clothing once the breeze dried him. He could still smell the deed. Its scent hung in the air. They sat in the cooling shade of the tree next to the horse, had another beer. His mind was everywhere and nowhere at once. He had never felt anything like that before.

“My first time was when I was fifteen. With Billy Hinkle. Three farms down. Billy was fifteen too. We were doing homework together because our school out here is small and didn’t have enough American History books. Since we lived close enough to each other, I just rode my bike to his house to share a book.”

Matt stared straight ahead into the bright green swaying of the cornfield. Everything seemed to be bathed in dazzling light.

“He really liked girls. A lot. Talked about them all the time. I wasn’t feeling exactly the same about them as he did. I just thought I was maturing at a slower pace. That eventually it would catch up with me.”

Matt confessed, “I never felt it either. I couldn’t figure out why. It just wasn’t ever in me.”

“I knew how to masturbate. I just didn’t have anyone in particular that prompted the urge for me to do it,” Caleb shared.

The beer was kicking in. Matt was relaxed and buzzing.

“He was always talking about BJs,” Caleb continued the tale. “I had no idea what a BJ was. So he described it to me.” A small laugh. “I was pretty surprised. I couldn’t imagine putting your mouth down there and doing that. But Billy told me a girl had done it to him and it was the best thing in the whole world.”

“It is.” The look of residual pleasure remained on Matt’s face. Caleb nudged him playfully with his knee.

“His mom and pop left for their grocery day. We had the place to ourselves for a whole hour. He looks at me and asks me if I wanna try. At first I wasn’t sure what he meant. Then he said it outright. A BJ? I was all for that.”

Caleb rose to retrieve the last beer for them to split. Matt’s eyes followed him as he walked to the cooler and then back to sit down next to him. He felt the sun-baked warmth still radiating off of Caleb’s naked upper body as he sidled in close to him. Their shoulders touched.

“He wasn’t the pertiest thing walking in the wheat field, but when you’re first starting out the gap between the mattress and box spring is sometimes enough.”

“Pillow. Mine was a pillow,” Matt admitted. Their confessions made them both laugh. He never thought he’d have this conversation with anyone. It was great to be able to be open and honest, and completely unashamed.

“He’d never given one himself, so we both had to learn about the teeth thing. You got to keep your lips over your teeth so, you know, you don’t circumcise someone twice,” he explained. “It was obvious that he wasn’t much into the mutual experience with another guy.
